Undergraduate Programmes of School of Publishing

The School of Publishing at Communication University of Zhejiang was established in June 2024, evolving from its predecessor, the Department of Convergent Publishing. It is the first school of its kind within universities in Zhejiang Province and hosts the province's only National First-Class Undergraduate Programme in Editing and Publishing. In 2024, it was approved to confer a Master's degree in Publishing. The School is a member of several national academic and professional institutes, including the National Steering Committee for Publishing Education, the Editing and Publishing Studies Committee of the Chinese Association for History of Journalism and Communication, and the Editing and Publishing Education Committee of the Chinese Editors' Society. It also holds the position of Vice-Chair institution within the National Digital Publishing Alliance of Higher Education.

The School boasts a distinguished faculty, with 94% holding doctoral degrees, 81% holding the rank of Professor or Associate Professor, and 86% recognised as "Dual-Qualified" professionals combining academic rigour with industry expertise. Furthermore, 66% of the faculty have international educational experience, and 100% are qualified to supervise master's students. The faculty also includes one Lead Principal Investigator of a Major National Social Science Fund project and two doctoral supervisors.

Firmly aligned with the technological revolution of the AI era, the School of Publishing is committed to an industry-oriented, profession-focused, and future-facing approach. It strives to cultivate versatile, innovative, practical, and media-convergent publishing professionals. The School emphasises collaborative education through industry-academia-research integration, partnering with the sector to develop convergent publishing curricula. It has established strong course clusters in areas such as data mining and project planning, convergent editing, copyright management, short video and live-stream marketing, and social reading. In partnership with Zhejiang Publishing United Group, the School co-founded the ZJ Publishing Studio and has launched flagship initiatives including the CUZ Publishing Lecture Series, the Zhejiang Youth Reading Festival, and the "Zhe Publishing" Cup Creative Book Design Competition. Together with The Commercial Press, it operates the Zhang Yuanji Publishing Excellence Programme for top innovative talent. The School also engages in diverse collaborations with leading publishers and cultural enterprises such as Electronic Industry Press, Posts & Telecom Press, Guangxi Normal University Press, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, and Guomai Culture. Additional industry-academia partnerships are maintained with organisations like Zhejiang Daily, Communication Brain, Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Centre, Zhejiang Science and Technology Museum, China Online Writers Village, ChineseAll, Founder Electronics, and Migu Digital Media.

The School houses the Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Philosophy and Social Sciences – the Intelligent Computing Laboratory for International Communication, providing robust support for courses in AI and international publishing, copyright trade, and social reading.

Furthermore, the School facilitates international opportunities through its Master's Bridge programme, offering various collaborative projects with the University of Westminster and the University of Stirling in the UK, and RMIT University in Australia. Particularly popular among students is the "3+1" joint programme with the University of Stirling (3 years undergraduate + 1 year master's).

Programmes

1.Undergraduate in Editing and Publishing (4 years)

This programme is designated as a National First-Class Undergraduate Programme. Launched in 2005, it was selected as a Key Development Programme of Communication University of Zhejiang in 2009 and recognised as a national first-class undergraduate programme in 2020. It supports the Zhejiang Provincial First-Class Discipline (Category A) in Journalism and Communication. The programme serves the convergent publishing industry needs of the nation and the Yangtze River Delta region, implementing a "New Liberal Arts" philosophy that integrates humanities, arts, management, and engineering. It aims to cultivate convergent publishing professionals equipped with capabilities in planning, editing, reviewing, and operations ("The Four Competencies"). The programme pioneered the concept of "Convergent Editing" in China, comprehensively training students in integrated editing skills for text, images, audio, and video in the AI era. This fosters an interdisciplinary, cross-sector training path for publishing professionals with an internet mindset. The programme enjoys significant national influence and wide recognition from academic and industry circles.

A distinctive feature is the Zhang Yuanji Publishing Excellence Programme. This selective stream recruits outstanding second-year students from humanities, sciences, and engineering disciplines across the university. Run in collaboration with The Commercial Press and supported by the Zhang Yuanji Fund under the CUZ Education Foundation, this programme employs a tripartite training system of "Humanistic Grounding, International Benchmarking, and Industry-Academia Application" to cultivate top innovative publishing talent with social responsibility, cultural literacy, digital thinking, and a global perspective.

Core Courses: History of Chinese and Foreign Editing and Publishing, Publishing Ethics and Regulations, Intercultural Communication, Overview of Overseas Publishing Industries (Bilingual), Copyright Trade (Bilingual), Introduction to Digital Publishing, Data Thinking and Data Mining, AI Literacy and Information Retrieval, Publishing Planning and Editorial Production, Book Design, Creation of Digital Publications, Digital Media Editing and Operation, Short Video Production, Online Live-Streaming Practice, Digital Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, etc.

Career Prospects: Graduates pursue careers in public institutions, publishing houses, digital publishing companies, state-owned cultural organisations, and internet companies, engaging in project planning, content editing, copyright management, reading promotion, digital marketing, and related roles.

2.Undergraduate in International Copyright Management (4 years)

This programme aims to cultivate high-level, versatile, practical, and internationally-oriented specialists equipped with a broad global vision, solid legal literacy, and keen innovative spirit, capable of thriving in the global digital content industry. Graduates will systematically master foundational theories of editing and publishing, intellectual property laws and regulations, and international copyright conventions. They will become proficient in the end-to-end business of international copyright management for digital content such as online literature, games, films, and short dramas, including copyright analysis/valuation, cross-border licensing negotiations, multi-format IP derivative development, global marketing, and digital copyright asset management.

Graduates will develop the following core competencies:
Cross-Cultural Operational Ability: To accurately assess audience preferences in different cultural markets, conduct effective cross-cultural communication and business negotiations, and promote the global expression and localised adaptation of outstanding Chinese cultural achievements.
Technology Application & Data Analysis Ability: To skillfully utilise AI and big data tools for copyright value mining, market trend analysis, and user insight, while understanding the ethical and governance challenges posed by new technologies like AIGC.
Strategic Thinking & Innovative Practice Ability: To strategically plan and execute international copyright import/export projects, possessing the innovative capacity to transform quality content into sustainable commercial value and international cultural influence.

Core Courses: Copyright Trade (Bilingual), Fundamentals and Practice of Video Production, Theory and Practice of Digital Publishing, Professional English for Publishing, Digital Copyright Trade, International Copyright Regulation, Intercultural Communication, Copyright Practice for Short Dramas and Games, Online Live-Streaming Practice, Short Video Production, Creative Writing.

Career Prospects: Graduates work in international copyright organisations, multinational cultural/media enterprises, leading digital content platforms, foreign-related legal service agencies, and relevant government departments, engaging in international copyright trade, digital rights management, and cultural export strategy.

3. Minor programme in Short Video and Live-Streaming  (1.5 years)

With a dual-drive core focus on "Cultural Communication + Live-Stream Operations", this micro-programme addresses the digital transformation of publishing and the specific niche of book live-streaming. Leveraging the university's teaching strengths in new media operations and its industry heritage in book content and cultural communication, it cultivates versatile, hands-on talent for the entire book live-streaming chain. Upon completion, students will possess three core abilities: book content interpretation and adaptation, full-process book live-stream operation, and balancing cultural communication with commercial objectives.

Core Courses: Introduction to Book Distribution and Marketing, Creative Video Production for Books, Skills and Techniques for Book Live-Stream Hosting, Planning and Operation of Book Live-Streams, Reading Guidance for Book Live-Streams, Practical Book Live-Streaming.

4. Minor programme in Science Communication (1.5 years)

Responding to global demands for technological innovation and science popularisation, and focusing on the dynamics of information dissemination in the converged media era, this micro-programme cultivates interdisciplinary talent distinguished by "Scientific Substance, Communication Empowerment, and Humanistic Concern". Upon completion, students become "T-shaped Professionals" – possessing depth in their primary discipline and breadth in science communication – equipped to serve as "Translators," "Connectors," and "Watchdogs" bridging the scientific community and the public.

Core Courses: Frontiers of Modern Science and Technology, Introduction to Science Communication, Science Ethics and the Spirit of Scientists, Scientific Writing and Editing, Scientific Visualisation Design, Workshop on Science Popularisation Video Production, Practical New Media Science Communication Operations, Planning and Hosting of Science Events.
