School of Publishing
Postgraduate Program of Publishing(MA in Publishing) at the Communication University of Zhejiang is offered by the School of Publishing, established in June 2024. This program, newly launched in 2024, is a professional master's degree program in publishing. The School of Publishing is a member of the National Steering Committee for Publishing Education, the Editing and Publishing Studies Committee of the Chinese Society for the History of Journalism, and the Editing and Publishing Education Committee of the Chinese Editors' Association. It also serves as the Deputy Chair of the National University Digital Publishing Alliance.
The school hosts the Editing and Publishing program, recognized as a National First-Class Undergraduate Program. Since 2005, it has cultivated nearly 1,400 students. In 2024, the program ranked 15th in the Soft Science ranking for Editing and Publishing and 1st in the Alumni Association ranking for Applied Universities.
The school demonstrates strong research capabilities. In collaboration with the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, it established the Yangtze River Delta Intelligent Communication Research Institute, hosting an annual Intelligent Media Summit and publishing Intelligent Media Development Report. Together with the publishing industry, it organizes seminars on Updated Publishing Formats and releases Research Report on New Publishing Formats. The school has distinguished itself in research areas such as digital copyright trade, publishing-related short videos, and livestreaming. Over the past five years, faculty members have secured eight National Social Science Fund projects, including one major project, published over 150 academic papers, and authored more than 20 monographs and textbooks.
Keeping pace with the technological revolution in the intelligent media era, the school maintains an industry-oriented, profession-focused, and future-facing approach. It collaborates with Zhejiang United Publishing Group to establish the Publishing Studio, creating signature activities such as the ZUC Publishing Lecture Series, Zhejiang Youth Reading Festival, and the Book Creative Competition. Strategic partnerships have been formed with The Commercial Press and China Renmin University Press, while diverse collaborations have been developed with publishers and enterprises including Publishing House of Electronics Industry, Posts & Telecom Press, Guangxi Normal University Press, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Press, Guomai Culture Co., Ltd. and Chinese All Digital Publishing Group Co., Ltd..
The program adopts a dual-supervisor system, pairing academic advisors with industry mentors. Its distinctive feature lies in the integration of industry, academia, and research through initiatives such as the Outstanding Publisher program and the ZUC Publishing Lecture Series. Through platforms like the ZUC Publishing Lecture Series and Publishing Bootcamp, the program attracts high-level industry resources.
Additionally, the school has established an overseas internship base at People's Daily Online Australia and engages in diverse collaborative projects with leading institutions such as the University of Westminster (UK), the University of Stirling (UK), and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia).
Programme Introduction
The Master of Publishing program emphasizes the cultivation of practical skills, innovative capabilities, and a sense of social responsibility. Upholding professional ethics and social accountability, it advocates for open, inclusive, and sustainable global publishing concepts, and is dedicated to serving multicultural exchanges and knowledge dissemination. The Master of Publishing programme offers three distinct specialisations: International Publishing and Copyright Trade, Intelligent Publishing and Social Reading, and Publishing Management and Operations.
1.International Publishing and Copyright Trade
Objectives: To cultivate high-level applied talents with a global perspective, cross-cultural communication skills, and proficiency in international publishing project planning, copyright management, and operational practices.
Core Courses: Artificial Intelligence and International Publishing, New Media Marketing in Publishing, Intercultural Communication and Narrative.
Career Prospective: Graduates may pursue roles such as Copyright Manager, International Publishing Editor, and Foreign Liaison Specialist in publishing houses, media groups, and digital cultural enterprises.
2. Intelligent Publishing and Social Reading
Objectives: To cultivate interdisciplinary talents proficient in intelligent publishing technologies (AI, big data) and social reading ecosystems, capable of driving innovation in integrated publishing and meeting personalized reading needs.
Core Courses: Artificial Intelligence and Social Reading, Publishing Culture Studies, New Media User Information Behavior.
Career Prospective: Graduates may serve as Integrated Publishing Project Manager, User Behavior Analyst, Digital Product Designer, or Social Reading Promotion Specialist in publishing institutions, new media companies, and internet enterprises.
3.Publishing Operations and Management
Objectives: To cultivate interdisciplinary publishing management talents proficient in publishing operations, marketing, IP industry chain management, and equipped with data-driven decision-making and new media marketing capabilities.
Core Courses: Digital Content Product Design and Operations, New Media Marketing and Applications in Publishing, Data Mining and Information Visualization.
Career Prospective: Graduates may take on roles such as New Media Operations Manager, Short Video/Livestream Marketing Specialist, IP Project Development Manager, or Publishing Brand Strategist in publishing enterprises, new media organizations, and cultural communication companies.
